BODY LANGUAGE – Whats queer about queer Pop?

BODY LANGUAGE – Whats queer about queer Pop?

From the 11th to the 13th of November there is going to be a very interesting festival on queer pop culture at Hebbel Am Ufer in Berlin, that I’m really looking forward to.
Starting on Thursday with a performance by Terre Thaemlitz and some more performances among others by Anat Ben David on saturday, a concert by MEN on friday and lot’s of interesting panels and films, I’m quite sure this is something nobody in Berlin should miss.
This is what the curators Tim Stüttgen and Christoph Gurk say:

“Pop has always been able to integrate the codes and secret languages of so-called minorities into mainstream. Ever since the glorious time of glam rock, forms to express rebellion against a normative order of gender have become interwoven in this dynamics. The legendary rise of Lady Gaga is a particularly powerful example of how smoothly single elements of dissident body politics can be transformed into a symbolic resource for the mythology of universal enlightenment and infinite self-determination. For three days “Body Language”, the third edition of the series “Life Is Live”, will explore the question if queer role models are capable of expressing criticism about sexual normalization in the medium of pop culture, without at the same time giving up the claim for a change. What exactly is happening when gestures serving the self-understanding of subcultures meet pop culture’s universal mechanisms of appropriation? Can this encounter be told as the story of an appropriation that happens over and over again? Which are the constructive perspectives of queer interventions into pop culture?”
